The Best Memory Care Facilities in Dallas That Your Loved Ones Deserve

  • Holistic Care: We sought facilities that prioritize medical and personal care. They should make sure residents receive comprehensive support for their physical and emotional well-being.
  • Compassionate Staff: Friendly and professional staff who build trusting relationships with residents were a top consideration. Their attentiveness fosters a supportive environment where residents feel valued and secure.
  • Specialized Amenities: We prioritized facilities with amenities designed specifically for individuals with memory loss. Examples include accessible walking paths, memory gardens, and engaging activity rooms.
  • Value for Money: We evaluated the cost of each facility against the services and amenities offered. Our goal was to identify memory care communities that provide exceptional value for your investment.

A friend asked me to go with him to scout for a memory care facility for his grandparents. I was a bit confused since I thought retirement homes, skilled nursing homes, assisted living, and memory care homes were all the same.

It turns out that memory care homes are specialized facilities designed specifically for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other memory-related conditions.

I was impressed with some of the facilities we visited. We saw beautiful gardens for strolls, music rooms that got everyone tapping their toes, and even some facilities that had resident pets.

Intrigued by this world I just recently discovered, I decided to make this the topic of my next review. After tons of research, tours, and chats with some truly awesome residents, I’m here to share the top memory care spots in Dallas.

Iris Memory Care’s goal is to provide a familiar, comforting environment—imagine single-family home vibes with warm scents, soothing sounds, and cozy living areas.

We like that they have a higher staff-to-resident ratio than most, meaning residents get more than just supervision. They get individual attention, regular chats, and yes, even heartwarming “hug rotations” throughout the day.

Residents can relax on covered porches, enjoy activities in the game room, or get pampered in the salon. The kitchen and dining areas are also designed to encourage interaction, and families are welcome to join mealtimes for some quality time.

For those needing extra support, Iris offers a variety of stay options, from short-term respite care to long-term stays.

While the cost might be a bit on the higher end, the personalized care, comfortable environment, and focus on resident well-being could be a clincher.

Pros

  • Higher staff-to-resident ratio
  • Has covered porches, a game room, and a salon
  • Families welcome to join mealtimes
  • Offers short-term respite care and long-term stays

Cons

  • A tad pricey

One of the finest Memory Care facilities I have ever seen

“This is one of the finest Memory Care facilities that I have ever seen! The place is clean. The staff to patient ratio is wonderful! Every day the staff provides activities that the patients can participate in. It is also a very clean and organized facility. If I ever had a family member that needed memory care, this is the first place I would consider placing them.”

Visited 6 memory care facilities, and The Iris was by far the best

“I visited 6 memory care facilities in the Dallas area. The Iris was by far the best place that I visited. I came back to the Iris 4 more times, sometimes unannounced, and each time I was more impressed with the level of care given to each resident. I never heard an unkind word spoken by the staff. The Iris is clean, cheerful and the concern that the staff gives to each resident is incredible. Paula was so helpful in explaining everything involved in making the transition and answering every question that I had. Paula’s positive upbeat attitude inspires the whole staff and the residents. My family and I are grateful for the excellent care that the Iris provides to all the residents. The best thing that I can say about the Iris is that my husband is well cared for, safe and very happy!”

We love the memory care floor at the Preston

“We love the memory care floor at the Preston. The entire team, including but not limited to Lisa, Mikaela, Chassie and the care partners, on the second floor take such good care of my mom on a daily basis. They consistently engage her in conversation and fun activities. Because my mom is happy at the Preston, I am also happy knowing she is receiving such good care.”

Edgemere offers a unique blend of luxurious surroundings and specialized dementia care. We love its Tuscan villa architecture and thriving social atmosphere.

But beyond the aesthetics lies their strength—their memory care program. Their team goes beyond general assisted living support; they’re highly trained professionals specializing in Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory loss.

Programs like Music & Memory utilize personalized playlists to tap into cherished memories and uplift spirits. Also, It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) technology adds another layer of engagement, providing interactive experiences that promote cognitive well-being.

As for safety,  24-hour supervision ensures residents receive constant care, while a secured courtyard allows them to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment.

While Edgemere’s memory care program appears comprehensive, there have been reports of understaffing. In memory care, a high staff-to-resident ratio is crucial to ensure each resident receives the personalized attention they need.

Arguably the best Memory Care service in Dallas

“Edgemere is a first-rate facility, arguably the best Memory Care service in Dallas. The staff is outstanding, well-trained and experienced with dementia patients. Our family has an Auntie, age 86, who has suffered from progressively worse dementia symptoms to the point where she is no longer able to live at home–even with 24/7 caregivers in residence. We screened, in person, 7 different facilities in Dallas, and Edgemere unquestionably came out on top. The assistance of staff such as Jennifer Wilson has been instrumental in assuring a smooth transition for our Auntie from home to Edgemere. The Edgemere team also has a superior doctor, Dr Peterson, who provided us with outstanding medical services. I highly recommend Edgemere from our family to your family.”

The food is unbelievably good! Such a variety to choose from both in the less formal Portabella and the Medici which is truly FINE DINING!! I made the perfect choice when I moved to EDGEMERE!!”

Sunrise on Hillcrest in North Dallas offers a holistic approach to memory care, focusing on resident well-being, personalized support, and a secure environment.

Their team is trained in dementia care and the Validation method, which helps them connect with residents and reduce anxiety. This personalized approach ensures residents feel understood and supported.

Their Life Enrichment Managers build relationships with residents and create personalized activities based on individual interests. Think cooking clubs, walks in the serene outdoor spaces, or movie nights in the media room.

With secure entrances and exits, smaller, easily navigated spaces, and carefully chosen decor, Sunrise prioritizes resident safety and creates a calming environment.

Plus, an in-house chef caters to resident preferences and dietary needs. However, we did hear reports of inconsistent food quality, so maybe ask about their menu when you schedule a consultation.

My mom’s dementia has actually improved

“They have been absolutely fantastic with my 86 year old mom! She is in the memory unit and her dementia has actually improved with them. Both times she returned from the hospital and almost had died and had little hope she wasn’t going to thrive, she regained her weight, perked back up from the love and attention, her strength and memory improved , and the bed sores from rehab improved and resolved. The caregivers are all so absolutely sweet and patient even when they get stressed. It is very clean, smells great, and the atmosphere is very pleasing and upbeat. The activities director is always so happy with the residents, loving and gets them involved and perks their mood up.”

Each interaction makes her day a little brighter

“My mother is in the memory care community at Sunrise on Hillcrest. I can’t speak highly enough about the care she has received from this wonderful team. She is remarkably healthy and happy today as a direct result of getting nutritious meals and caring, friendly interactions every single day with the team members of Sunrise. When I take her around the neighborhood we are frequently stopped by team members who want to say hello to mom. They often tell her they love her or how pretty she looks today. My mom lights up every time – and I can see how each interaction makes her day a little brighter. I’m so thankful for the kindness and genuine care that the good folks at Sunrise give to my mom.”

Monticello West has been serving the community for over 30 years. We like that they go beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to memory care.

For instance, they create a “lasting legacy” profile for each resident, capturing details about their life story, hobbies, likes, and dislikes. This information becomes the foundation for crafting personalized activities and routines.

Also, they incorporate structured routines into the daily schedule. Plus, they assist with self-care tasks like dressing and grooming, promoting a sense of accomplishment and dignity.

Most importantly, they provide a variety of engaging activities—from memory games to arts and crafts programs—to stimulate residents mentally and socially. And they offer 24/7 nursing assistance so that residents receive constant medical supervision.

While Monticello West presents a compelling care philosophy, there have been reports of lapses in care (medication management, bedsores, etc.). You might want to talk to current residents or their families to get a clearer picture.

          Pros

          • Over 30 years of experience
          • Creates a “lasting legacy” profile
          • Incorporates structured routines
          • Assists with self-care tasks
          • Offers stimulating and engaging activities
          • 24/7 nursing assistance

          Cons

          • Reports of lapses in care

Welcoming home for newcomers and the family of the residents

“The staff and the residents at this convenient and upscale assisted living & memory care residence make it a welcoming home for both newcomers and the family of the residents. My father and I both like the food and the dining experience is lovely with sit down service or delivery to the rooms. My father has memory and mobility issues but likes his independence and the care providers and administration work hard to keep track of him and keep him safe and engaged in the community. The nurses are also a godsend as managing his medication was confusing and their extensive expertise, organization and communication have greatly improved my quality of life while assuring my dad has just what he needs. Go and meet these folks, you’ll be delighted as I am.”

This facility has life, love, and laughter

“Monticello West has gone above and beyond to help our family at every turn. Our father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and our mother was no longer able to care for him at home; her health was declining, too. Monticello West provided support and education for us as we tried to navigate this difficult transition for our parents. There have been many challenges and their compassion and support has met us at every turn. We are grateful for the care and concern they have given both of our parents, working hard to accommodate their every need. This facility has life, love and laughter throughout with many long term staff members giving their all. It is evident that our parents have had excellent care on their watch. Thank you for your dedication and the peace of mind we have knowing our parents are in good hands. Sincerely, Elizabeth, Sara, Janet & Lisa.”
