The 5 Best Driving Schools in Dallas That’ll Teach You How It’s Actually Done (Minus the Stress)

  • Instruction: We included schools that offer clear, structured lessons with certified instructors who effectively teach both theoretical knowledge and practical driving skills.
  • Assessment and Feedback: We selected institutions that provide regular progress evaluations and constructive feedback to help students continuously improve their driving abilities.
  • Resources and Materials: We went for those who provide useful learning materials to students during classroom lessons, and allow trainees to use company vehicles during behind-the-wheel sessions and road tests.
  • Reputation: We prioritized academies with favorable reviews and testimonials to ensure they have a strong and trustworthy public image.

I once saw a video on social media where a father was teaching his daughter how to drive safely, only to end up yelling and stressing her out. What was meant to be father-daughter bonding turned into an “I shouldn’t have done this with you!” moment.

That happened because the dad isn’t a professional driving instructor. No matter how good a driver he thinks he is, that doesn’t mean he knows how to teach—especially when nerves are high, and patience runs thin.

Not wanting to experience the same awful situation with my close friend, I worked with my team to find the best driving schools in Dallas with instructors who are patient, calm, and supportive.

Read on if you want to learn with confidence (and keep your family relationships intact).

Get Drivers Ed team has only one goal: to help their clients gain confidence and feel fully prepared when they get behind the wheel.

We find them the perfect school for young ones. Unlike most academies that offer pre-recorded online courses, their live instructor-led online teen driving lessons provide an expert-guided path for kids to become responsible and knowledgeable drivers.

Plus, their in-person driving program for teens includes lessons on neighborhood driving and parking techniques, as well as highway and freeway driving—more than enough for beginners.

However, they don’t administer road tests, so you’ll need to book the exam separately with DPS or an authorized third-party academy.

On a brighter note, clients we spoke to appreciated the institution’s bundles, which offer both online and in-person lessons at a discounted price.

Pros

  • Offers live instructor-led online teen driving lessons
  • Excellent in-person driving program for teens
  • Provides bundles

Cons

  • Doesn’t administer road tests

Dallas Driving School is one of the city’s most established driving institutions, having been in business since 1992.

They offer both online and in-person lectures for all ages, including a remote driver education course for 15- to 17-year-olds, face-to-face adult driving lessons, and a defensive driving program.

As a DPS-authorized third-party road test administrator, they allow adults to take the exam immediately after obtaining their learner’s license.

Apart from their services, we appreciate that they accept same-day bookings, which is truly convenient if you have limited availability.

We were only concerned about clients’ reports of not hearing back from the school after they booked an appointment.

Pros

  • Over 30 years in business
  • Offers online and in-person driving lessons for all ages
  • Administers DPS-authorized road tests
  • Accepts same-day appointments

Cons

  • Incidents of ghosting

Bruton Driving School is known for being the only DPS-authorized TPST driving school in East Dallas.

They’re a great choice if you already have driving experience but want to refresh your knowledge. You can buy individual lessons, allowing you to cherry-pick the ones you need at the moment.

But for us, what makes them stand out is their multiple package offerings, including classroom, behind-the-wheel, and BTW-road test bundles for teens, as well as a BTW-road test package for adults.

That said, several clients we spoke to mentioned that the institution charges high additional costs, such as $50 in tax fees.

Pros

  • Only DPS-authorized TPST institution in East Dallas
  • Offers multiple packages
  • Can buy individual lessons

Cons

  • Reports of high additional costs

Top Professional Driving School has earned a reputation for having a team of DMV-licensed instructors. Such certification means they meet all state safety and operational regulations required to teach driving.

They provide comprehensive teen and adult programs, from classroom lessons and behind-the-wheel training to permit testing and road exams.

If you want to be fully confident before taking the road test, take advantage of their private in-car lesson packages, which offer extended hours of one-on-one behind-the-wheel instruction.

The only catch is that we heard about lapses in the instructors’ attentiveness during in-person lessons. Some students said their teacher used a phone during the session, with some even taking a call.

Pros

  • DMV-licensed instructors
  • Offers comprehensive teen and adult programs
  • Has private in-car lesson packages for all ages

Cons

  • Reports of instructors using phones during in-person lessons

Defensive Driving Texas offers a TDLR-licensed online defensive driving program designed to sharpen your awareness behind the wheel and help you drive more safely.

Upon completing the course, you’ll receive a certificate accepted by all Texas courts, which you can use to dismiss a traffic violation ticket.

Unlike other schools, clients appreciate the institution for electronically reporting to the TDLR, making the process fast and hassle-free. Plus, their 24/7 customer support is great for those with urgent concerns.

But because they don’t offer courses other than defensive driving, it’s clear to us that they’re not the best fit for those looking for beginner-focused driving lessons that tackle vehicle operation, traffic laws, and basic skills.

Pros

  • Offers TDLR-licensed online defensive driving program
  • Automatic reporting to TDLR upon course completion
  • Accepted by all Texas courts
  • Provides 24/7 customer support

Cons

  • No specific beginner driving lessons

The layout of the course was great

“The layout of the course was great. It kept the course interesting & funny. Anytime I needed assistance I did not have to wait regardless of the time. Got it completed in about 2 weeks. Easy to get back to your section when returning. I would recommend class to anyone that needs it or taking it to get auto discount. Plus it makes you aware your driving skills & the drivers around you. Love the driving scenarios.”
