Pros

  • Recognized consistently as a “Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly
  • Highly supportive and great bedside manner
  • Personally contacts his patients regarding updates
  • Commonly sees patients seeking a second or third opinion
  • Supported by professional and caring staff

Cons

  • Doesn’t accept insurance
  • Only open for 4 days a week

Widely respected by both his patients and his peers in the profession, Dr. Scott Zashin is a board-certified rheumatologist and internist who proudly serves in the Dallas area.

He’s known for having an engaging and personal approach that carefully takes each of his patient’s medical histories into consideration.

Being able to deliver healthcare in a systematic and empathetic way is something that seemingly comes naturally to him. With that, we think he’s got such a great bedside manner.

It makes sense, seeing as he’s also been recognized as a “Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly for years on end. It’s a mark of a trustworthy doctor amongst other things.

We obviously think that it’s great if a doctor has credentials all the way to the moon. But it’s even better if that can be paired with top-notch patient care that’s not always about the money.

Dr. Zashin is one such doctor, in our opinion. One that is highly supportive and even personally contacts his patients so that he could give them the timely update that they need.

Currently, he, unfortunately, doesn’t accept insurance anymore. Which means it would be a bit more costly to see him.

But the upside is that you’ll have his undivided attention easier. This is where his engaging and personal approach comes from, and you’ll be more certain of your road to recovery this way.

He’s also got great staff members that are about as professional and caring as him. We think it adds to the overall ease that you’d feel when you’re in his care.

Since his office is only open for 4 days a week (being closed on Wednesdays too), you’re going to have to set an appointment a bit earlier.

Seeing as he provides second and third opinions as well, you could expect him to be considerably booked on average.

Pros

  • Board-certified in both rheumatology and internal medicine
  • Also does joint injections for osteoarthritis or joint inflammations
  • Able to refer patients to other competent BSW specialists
  • Has staff members that are friendly and welcoming

Cons

  • A bit inconsistent with giving proper care and attention to other patients
  • Not that accommodating in emergency situations

Dr. Wassila Amari of Baylor Scott and White Health (BSW Health) has got extensive experience in a variety of autoimmune diseases under rheumatology.

Being board-certified in both rheumatology and internal medicine, she’s definitely up there among the most competent bunch of rheumatologists in the Dallas area.

Further solidifying her credentials is that she also performs joint injections for osteoarthritis and other forms of joint inflammations. It’s seemingly one of the highlights of her broad specialty.

You’re also greeted at her office by friendly and welcoming staff members. This is a must-have for any establishment in general, and they seem to nail it in that regard.

Being part of BSW Health’s roster, she naturally has the ease of access to referring other competent specialists if deemed necessary.

The thing about this though, is that she rather does so more frequently. She seems to have a thing for referring her fellow specialists.

In turn, this has considerably rubbed some patients the wrong way. It seemed as if she wanted other specialists to handle them instead of taking on the job herself.

Although this doesn’t happen all the time, it still leaves an impression that she’s not as consistent in giving people the care and attention that they need.

What further exacerbates this issue is that she seems unwilling to adjust to other clients’ calls for emergency.

It seems like she’s persistent in following original appointment schedules, which in our opinion could be life-threatening for a patient experiencing rheumatic-related emergencies.

Whether or not it counts as an objective emergency by the doctor or the hospital’s protocols, it just doesn’t sound justifiable to refuse to see a patient in discomfort.

To summarize, Dr. Amari definitely has all the bells and whistles of a rheumatologist.

But we recommend looking elsewhere for more immediate attention to rheumatic-related emergencies.

3. Richard Stern, MD (Rheumatology Associates in Grapevine)

Pros

  • Included in the “Texas Monthly Super Doctors” from 2013 to 2021
  • Has staff that is thorough and efficient in their work
  • Balances professional recommendations with great bedside manner
  • Accepts telehealth appointments

Cons

  • One of his nurses is sometimes rude
  • Not that reliable with insurance

Dr. Richard Stern of Rheumatology Associates in Grapevine is both a board-certified rheumatologist and an active volunteer at Parkland Hospital’s rheumatology clinic.

Right off the bat, we can see a glimpse into how capable Dr. Stern is at multitasking. And what’s great is that all of these relate to his strive to provide the best healthcare for rheumatic patients.

Both he and his staff are thorough and efficient in their work. It’s great seeing him take his time to explain the nature of his treatment plans in a way that’s easy for the client to understand.

After all, honesty and transparency are essential qualities that a doctor should have to be deemed trustworthy.

It’s nice to see that these kinds of qualities can also be found through his telehealth appointments. This also bumps up his availability a bit for people who can’t make it onsite.

His expertise in rheumatology isn’t something to be questioned. A lot of patients are thankful over the years for his endless efforts to identify and treat their illnesses appropriately.

So not only does he give out professional recommendations, but he also balances them with an empathetic bedside manner that guides the patient every step of the way.

We think this balance of professionalism and generosity is a big factor that made him included in the “Texas Monthly Super Doctors” from 2013 to 2021.

With this, he’s certainly a promising rheumatologist to consider, and we’re hoping for another year of his inclusion.

Now a few downsides that you should look out for. Firstly, one of his nurses tends to be rude over the phone whenever you’re trying to make an appointment.

And secondly, he and his team are generally not that reliable with insurance.

It could take weeks before you hear back from them regarding insurance. Before you know it, you’ve probably already paid an egregious amount that they wouldn’t be able to refund.

4. Stanley Cohen, MD (Rheumatology Associates)

Pros

  • Highly competent and trustworthy rheumatologist seen by many
  • Has good judgment in pain medication prescriptions
  • Has office staff and nurses that are professional and attentive to each patient
  • Thoroughly coordinates with other specialists for more clarity on patient’s health

Cons

  • Not as available due to being fairly overbooked

Dr. Stanley Cohen is another rheumatologist from Rheumatology Associates (Walnut Hill branch) with great credentials and trusted by many.

Dr. Cohen impressively doubled in board-certified in rheumatology and internal medicine. He’s not only highly competent on paper, but on the great improvements on his patients’ health too.

Being highly detail-oriented, he demonstrates attentiveness and care in just about any task that he’s qualified and licensed to do.

One such task is giving pain medication. He overall has good judgment with his prescriptions and dosages.

Exercising utmost care in giving out medication makes him even more trustworthy of a doctor in our book.

He’s also detail-oriented in the sense that he often coordinates with other specialists that the patient already met. We say that it’s a great way to be up to speed on the patient’s health.

Considering he’s had patients since way back in the 80s, he’s an exceptionally up-to-date rheumatologist in the way that he still maintains the trust of his clients for decades on end.

His overall professional demeanor seems to be contagious for all the people he works with, which is, of course, a good thing.

All of his office staff and nurses demonstrate the same attentiveness and care that he has, which we believe should be the case for all doctor’s offices.

The only real drawback to his services is that you’re going to have to fall in line pretty early.

By this, we mean that he’s quite a popular doctor. So naturally, he’s going to be fairly overbooked on a weekly basis.

We think it’s definitely worth the wait though. With his great credentials and patient care to back him up, he can certainly be a lifesaver.

Pros

  • Received advanced training via a rheumatology fellowship at UT Southwestern
  • Consistently named as “Best Doctor” by D Magazine from 2008 to 2021
  • Highly knowledgeable and personable with her patients
  • Gives great continuous patient care with excellent monitoring of symptoms

Cons

  • Some of her staff have been rude with an inquiring person without a referral

Dr. Kathryn Dao has received advanced training through UT Southwestern Medical Center’s rheumatology fellowship. Currently, she’s apparently one of UTSW’s best rheumatologists.

To be able to work in the same environment that trained you is probably a dream for some. For Dr. Dao, it’s only but a single part of her continuous pursuit of knowledge in rheumatology.

Keeping up with the times is definitely an edge for any healthcare provider. Her rich expertise in the field enables her to answer all the questions that her patients ask.

She’s even able to ask all the right questions in carefully identifying conditions and coming up with diagnoses. It’s certainly a skill that takes years of painstaking work to get right.

Her patients appreciate her extensive knowledge in this regard, and we do too. Not only that, but she’s able to give great continuous care while closely monitoring each patient’s symptoms as well.

We think these kinds of efforts are great ways to be more personable with patients and to make them feel that they’re in capable hands.

She certainly is more than capable if she’s been consistently named “Best Doctor” by D Magazine for 14 straight years and counting.

She’s yet another doctor that we hope would never lose that streak for the common good.

We wished, though, that some of her staff could avoid being rude just because someone is inquiring without a referral. It’s quite an unusual thing to be rude about.

In healthcare, the staff is first in line in handling every potential client or patient. It wouldn’t matter how good the doctor is if people are already being put off by the front desk.

Therefore, it’s not really illogical to say that the staff members are just as important as the doctors themselves. They should both demonstrate good healthcare service after all.
