One question I often hear from people who are unfamiliar with Dallas is whether it is a liberal or conservative place. 

It’s a question that can be difficult to answer definitively, as Dallas is a diverse and dynamic city that encompasses a wide range of political viewpoints and ideologies.

From its roots as a center of oil and gas wealth and conservative politics to its more recent transformation into a hub of tech innovation and progressive activism, Dallas is a place that defies easy categorization. 

In this article, we’ll explore the different factors that contribute to Dallas’s political identity and try to answer the question of whether it leans more liberal or conservative. 

Is Dallas a liberal or conservative city? 

Dallas is a complex city with both conservative and liberal aspects. While leaning more liberal than Texas, its voting patterns aren’t solidly blue. 

A strong business community exists, but it also values diversity and inclusivity. Constantly evolving, it’s hard to label definitively.

Dallas is known for its conservative leanings, particularly in regard to its voting patterns. In the 2020 presidential election, the majority of voters in Dallas County voted for Democratic candidate Joe Biden. 

However, this was not the case for the state of Texas as a whole, which went to Republican candidate Donald Trump. This suggests that while Dallas may be more liberal than the rest of the state, it is still not a solidly blue city.

Moreover, there are several aspects of Dallas that could be seen as more conservative. For example, Dallas has a strong business community, and the city is home to many large corporations. 

This focus on business and industry could be seen as aligning with more conservative values.

As mentioned earlier, Dallas is also known for its diversity and inclusivity. The city is home to a range of ethnic and cultural groups, and there are organizations and initiatives that work to promote social justice and equality. 

These values could be seen as more liberal in nature.

In my experience, I’ve witnessed that Dallas is constantly evolving and changing. While it may have had more conservative leanings in the past, there is a growing movement towards more progressive values, particularly among younger generations. 

Additionally, the city’s demographic makeup is becoming increasingly diverse, which is likely to have an impact on its political landscape in the coming years.

Political Map of Texas 

Let’s start with the liberal cities in Texas, which include Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. 

These cities are all known for their diverse and progressive communities, which have historically championed civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental issues. 

In recent years, these cities have also become strongholds for the Democratic Party, with all of them voting for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Austin 

Austin is the capital city of Texas and a hub for progressive politics. The city has a vibrant tech scene, a thriving music and arts scene, and a strong commitment to environmental and sustainability initiatives. 

Travis Country, where Austin is located, voted overwhelmingly for Biden in 2020, with over 72% of the vote. 

Dallas 

Dallas has seen significant demographic changes in recent years and has become more diverse, with a growing Hispanic and African American population. 

It’s also home to a thriving LGBTQ+ community, and its annual Pride Parade draws tens of thousands of people. In the 2020 election, Dallas Country voted for Biden with 56% of the vote. 

Houston 

Houston is the largest city in Texas and has a large and diverse population, including a significant number of immigrants and refugees. 

The city is known for its robust energy industry and strong environmentalism, as seen in initiatives such as the Houston Climate Action Plan. Harris County, where Houston is located, voted for Biden in 2020, with 56% of the vote. 

San Antonio 

San Antonio is the second-largest city in Texas and has a rich cultural heritage, with a significant Hispanic population. The city is known for its vibrant arts and music scene, as well as its strong commitment to social justice and civil rights. 

Bexar County, where San Antonio is located, voted for Biden with 58% of the vote. 

Now, let’s move on to the conservative cities in Texas, which include Fort Worth, Lubbock, and Amarillo. These cities are known for their traditional values and conservative politics, and they have historically been Republican strongholds.

Fort Worth 

Fort Worth, located just west of Dallas, has a strong economy and a growing population. The city is known for its cowboy culture and commitment to family values. 

In the 2020 election, Tarrant County, where Fort Worth is located, voted for Trump with 51% of the vote. 

Lubbock 

Lubbock, located in West Texas, has a strong agricultural industry and is known for its conservative values. The city is home to Texas Tech University and has a growing population. 

In the 2020 election, Lubbock County voted for Trump, with over 63% of the vote.

Amarillo 

Amarillo, located in the Texas Panhandle, also has a strong economy and a growing population. The city is known for its cowboy culture and commitment to family values. 

In the 2020 election, Potter County, where Amarillo is located, voted for Trump with 51% of the vote.
