Difference between Dallas Arboretum Gate 1 and Gate 4 

Gate 1 offers a grand entrance, easy accessibility, and discounted rates for children, seniors, and military personnel. Gate 4 is quieter, more serene, and offers access to the Children’s Adventure Garden. 

Both entrances provide access to stunning gardens, events, and attractions at the Dallas Arboretum. 

Gate 1 is the main entrance and is located on Garland Road. This entrance provides a grand entrance to the Arboretum with its iconic Crape Myrtle Allee leading up to the Jonsson Color Garden. 

This entrance is easily accessible from major highways and provides ample parking options. 

On the other hand, Gate 4 is located on Gaston Road and is a quieter, more hidden entrance. While it may not offer the grandeur of Gate 1, it provides a more serene experience, especially if you’re looking to avoid crowds. 

This entrance also provides access to the beautiful Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, which is a must-visit for families with children. 

Another notable difference between the two gates is the pricing. Gate 1 has a higher admission fee for adults than Gate 4, which, on the other hand, has a flat fee for admission, which includes access to the Children’s Adventure Garden. 

Events and Activities in the Dallas Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum hosts various events like Dallas Blooms (February-April) and Autumn at the Arboretum (September-November), with over 500,000 blooming bulbs and 90,000 pumpkins on display, respectively. 

The Twilight Tunes summer concert series and the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden are must-see attractions for all ages. 

One of the most popular events that the Dallas Arboretum hosts is the annual Dallas Blooms Festival, which takes place from late February to mid-April. 

During this time, the Arboretum is adorned with more than 500,000 blooming bulbs, creating a stunning display of colors and fragrances.

Another must-see event is the Autumn at the Arboretum festival, which takes place from late September to early November. During this time, the Arboretum is transformed into a pumpkin wonderland, with more than 90,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash on display.

How long does it take to walk the Dallas Arboretum?

It takes 2-4 hours to walk through all 66 acres and 19 gardens of the Dallas Arboretum, depending on your pace and the time of year. 

In summer, it’s recommended to visit during cooler times of the day and bring water because walking through all of this can be quite long and strenuous in the heat. 

During the spring and fall months, when the weather is milder, it is enjoyable to take your time and stroll through the Arboretum at a leisurely pace. 

However, during the summer months, it can get quite hot, and you may want to plan your visit during the morning or late afternoon when the sun is not intense. You should also bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during your walk. 

If you are in a time crunch or just want to see the highlights, the Dallas Arboretum has a list of recommended areas to visit, which includes the DeGolyer Gardens, the Woman’s Garden, and the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. 

These areas are a great way to experience the best of the Arboretum in a shorter amount of time. 

In my personal experience, I find that spending at least 3 hours at the Dallas Arboretum is a good amount of time to see everything at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed. 

However, if you have more time to spare, I would highly recommend taking your time and exploring every corner of the Arboretum. You never know what hidden gem you may find! 

What is the best time to visit the Dallas Arboretum?

The best time to visit the Dallas Arboretum depends on personal preference. Spring offers blooming bulbs, summer has annuals and tropical plants, fall offers autumnal colors, and winter boasts holiday lights. 

Overall, there’s no bad time to visit, but expect crowds during peak season. 

There’s never really a bad time to visit the Dallas Arboretum. However, there are certainly times of the year when the garden is at its most beautiful and enjoyable. 

Spring is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit the Arboretum. With over 500,000 blooming bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, the garden is a sea of vibrant colors and sweet fragrances. 

The weather is also pleasant, with temperatures averaging in the 60s and 70s, making it an ideal time for a leisurely stroll. 

Keep in mind that spring is the peak season, so the garden can get crowded on weekends and holidays. I recommended visiting during the weekdays to avoid the crowds. 

Summer in Dallas can be hot and humid, but the Arboretum offers respite from the heat with its shady paths and fountains. 

The summer months are when the garden showcases its annuals and tropical plants, including hibiscus, cannas, and elephant ears. 

The Waterwise Garden, a relatively new addition to the Arboretum, is especially worth visiting during this time. It features plants that are adapted to thrive in Texas’ hot and dry climate, and it’s an excellent example of sustainable gardening. 

Fall is my personal favorite time to visit the Dallas Arboretum. The garden is transformed into a stunning autumnal landscape, with thousands of chrysanthemums, asters, and salvias in shades of red, orange, and yellow. 

The cooler temperatures and gentle breeze make it a comfortable time for outdoor activities, such as picnicking or attending one of the Arboretum’s many events, such as the popular pumpkin festival. 

Winter in Dallas may be mild compared to other parts of the country, but the Arboretum still offers a unique winter experience. 

During the holiday season, the garden is adorned with over a million lights and whimsical holiday displays, such as a gingerbread village and a 12 Days of Christmas exhibit. 

It’s a magical time to visit, and the colder temperatures give visitors an excuse to bundle up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa.

What can you take to the Arboretum in Dallas? 

You can take sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes, a camera, and a reusable water bottle to the Dallas Arboretum. 

You can also pack a picnic or visit on-site dining options, but no glass containers or alcohol are allowed. Dress appropriately for the weather and enjoy this beautiful place.

To dress appropriately for the weather, I recommend wearing light, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes for walking during summer. During the winter months, it can get chilly, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Next, it’s always a good idea to bring sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. The Arboretum has plenty of shade, but some areas may still be exposed to the sun. 

The Arboretum also has several dining options, including the Restaurant DeGolyer and the Lula Mae Slaughter Dining Terrace. 

If you’re planning to take photos, be sure to bring your camera or smartphone. The Arboretum is a beautiful and photogenic location, with plenty of picturesque spots to capture. 

However, tripods and professional photography equipment require advance permission and may be subject to additional fees. 

Lastly, it’s always a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. The Arboretum has several water fountains throughout the park, so you can refill your bottle as needed. 

Can you take photos at the Dallas Arboretum?
